Pricing

How much does short-form video editing cost in 2026?

We compared publicly listed prices for Reels, TikTok and Shorts editing — freelancers, subscription services and agencies — and broke down what you’re actually paying for.

The short answer

Most people buying professional short-form editing in 2026 pay somewhere between about $20 and $100 per finished vertical video, with marketplace freelancers below that range and “unlimited” agency retainers well above it. The spread is huge because “a short-form edit” can mean anything from trimmed clips with auto-captions to a fully designed, sound-designed piece with motion graphics.

The useful question isn’t “what’s the cheapest?” but “what does each price level actually include, and what will it cost me in my own time?”

What actually drives the price

1. Editing depth

A “basic” edit trims the start and end, cuts obvious pauses and adds auto-generated captions. A premium edit rebuilds the hook, restructures the story, adds b-roll and motion graphics, designs captions, times music and sound effects and grades color. The second can take several times longer — and that time is what you’re paying for.

2. Who does the work

Agencies carry account managers, project managers and software platforms. That overhead buys process and redundancy, and it shows up in the price. Independent editors have lower overhead, but capacity is finite.

3. Volume and commitment

Almost every provider discounts volume: monthly packages and packs bring the per-video cost down because batching is more efficient (one brief, one style, one review session).

4. Source material

Editing a clean, well-lit 40-second talking-head take is quicker than mining a 90-minute podcast for clips or rebuilding horizontal footage for vertical. Repurposing work may be priced per finished clip but take longer per clip.

5. Turnaround

Guaranteed fast turnaround requires spare capacity, which costs money. If you batch-film and schedule ahead, you rarely need to pay for speed.

The hidden costs nobody quotes

  • Your management time. A cheap editor who needs detailed notes on every video can cost more in your hours than a pricier one who gets it right first time.
  • Inconsistency. Rotating editors means re-explaining your style. Inconsistent edits make a feed look less like a brand.
  • Revision loops. Check how revisions work before you sign — rounds, response times, who you talk to.
  • Music licensing. Make sure you know what music is used and whether it’s cleared for your use, especially for business accounts.

How to budget for short-form editing

  1. Start from your posting schedule. 3 posts a week ≈ 12–13 videos a month; daily posting ≈ 30.
  2. Decide the quality bar. Brand-building and expertise content usually needs premium editing; high-volume clipping can be lighter.
  3. Price per finished video, not per hour. It makes quotes comparable and your costs predictable.
  4. Run a paid test. One or two videos before a monthly commitment — see our hiring checklist.
