The talking-head editing checklist: 20 checks before you post

Talking-head videos are the easiest content to film and the easiest to scroll past. Run every edit through these 20 checks before it goes live.

Use this as a final pass on your own edits, or as the standard you hold an editor to. Each check is a yes/no.

Hook (first seconds)

  1. Does the video start on the first meaningful word — no breath, no “so”, no greeting?
  2. Is the strongest line of the take at the very start, even if it was said later?
  3. Is there an on-screen text hook that adds to what is said?
  4. Would a stranger know why to keep watching after two seconds, with sound off?

Cuts and pacing

  1. Are ums, false starts and long pauses removed?
  2. Do the cuts still sound natural — no clipped words or robotic rhythm?
  3. Does something change on screen every few seconds?
  4. Is every sentence earning its place? Cut repetition ruthlessly.

Framing and visuals

  1. Are there punch-ins on the key lines?
  2. Is b-roll used where a claim, tool or example is mentioned?
  3. Are eyes and face clear of the app’s interface?
  4. Is colour consistent with your other videos?

Captions

  1. Are captions fully accurate — names, numbers, brand terms?
  2. Are they inside the safe zone on every platform you post to?
  3. Are key words highlighted to guide the eye?
  4. Are they readable on a phone at arm’s length?

Audio

  1. Is the voice clear and level from start to finish?
  2. Is music clearly below speech (or left out)?

Ending

  1. Does the ending deliver what the hook promised?
  2. Is there one clear call to action — not three?
