How to evaluate a video editing portfolio

Every editor’s portfolio looks good at a glance. This checklist helps you see what’s actually there — and what isn’t.

Short answer

Judge an editing portfolio by the first two seconds of each video, pacing, caption quality, sound design and whether the work fits your niche. Ask which videos are their own work and request raw-to-final examples.

Every editor’s portfolio looks great for the first three seconds. That’s kind of the job. What you want to know is what happens in second four, and whether the editor can do that for content that looks like yours.

Watch it like your audience will

Open the portfolio on your phone. Watch each sample with the sound off first, then on. That is how most short-form is consumed, and it exposes weak captions and slow openings immediately.

The seven checks

  1. Hook: is there a reason to keep watching within the first two seconds?
  2. Pacing: are pauses and filler gone without the speaker sounding robotic?
  3. Captions: accurate, readable, timed to speech and clear of the app’s buttons?
  4. Visual purpose: does each b-roll insert or graphic illustrate something specific?
  5. Sound: clear voice, music under speech, effects that add weight rather than noise?
  6. Range: different formats and niches — not one template repeated?
  7. Fit: has the editor worked on content like yours?

Signs of a weak portfolio

  • Every video looks identical regardless of client.
  • Only flashy effects, no talking-head or simple formats.
  • Before/after examples where the “after” is just captions.
  • Client logos or results with no way to verify them.

What to ask next

Pick one sample and ask the editor to explain their choices: why that hook, why cut there. Then run a small paid test. You can browse the YASH EDITS portfolio against this checklist.
