Reels vs TikTok vs Shorts: how the edit should differ

One vertical master, three very different feeds. Here is what an editor changes for Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts — and what can stay the same.

What stays the same everywhere

All three platforms are vertical, full-screen and swipe-driven. On every one of them the edit needs a hook in the first moments, no dead air, captions that work with sound off, and an ending that pays off the opening. If your edit gets those right, it will be competitive on all three. The differences below are about the final polish.

Instagram Reels

  • Polish is welcome. Reels audiences accept a more designed look: branded captions, clean colour, motion graphics.
  • Three surfaces. A Reel shows in the Reels tab, the main feed and your profile grid — so leave a clean, readable frame you can use as the cover.
  • Shareability. Saves and sends matter. Quotable lines, clear tips and relatable moments give people a reason to share.
  • Interface. Your handle, caption and buttons sit along the bottom and right. Keep captions and faces clear of them.

TikTok

  • Native beats produced. Anything that looks like an ad gets swiped. Keep energy raw, text styles familiar, and start mid-action.
  • On-screen text hooks. A short line in the first frame frames the video before the audio lands.
  • Retention checkpoints. Change something every few seconds — a cut, a zoom, a new piece of information.
  • Sound is added in-app. Trending sounds are best added when posting, so they’re licensed for your account.

YouTube Shorts

  • Part of a channel. A Short sits next to your long-form library, so the edit should make a related long video the obvious next watch.
  • Loops help. Endings that flow back into the first frame encourage replays.
  • Longer is allowed, not required. Shorts can now run up to three minutes, but the edit should be as long as the idea and no longer.
  • Cut from long-form. Many of the best Shorts are standalone moments rebuilt from existing YouTube videos — see YouTube Shorts editing.

One shoot, three exports

You don’t need three separate shoots. The efficient setup is one recording session, one master edit with safe zones compatible with all three apps, and small per-platform changes: a different first line of text, a different ending, sound added natively. That’s how the YASH EDITS short-form service delivers multi-platform batches.

One batch, every platform.
