Hiring

15 questions to ask before hiring a video editor or agency

A sales call tells you how a provider sells. These fifteen questions tell you how they actually work.

Short answer

Before hiring an editor, ask who edits your videos, how revisions and turnaround work, what the price includes per finished video, how they keep your style consistent, how files are shared and whether they will do a paid test.

Sales calls are good at showing you how someone sells. They’re not great at showing you how someone works. These are the questions worth asking any editor — including us — and the answers that should make you walk away.

About the people

  1. Who will actually edit my videos — and is it the same person every time?
  2. Who do I talk to when I have feedback?
  3. Have you edited content like mine (talking-head, podcast, product, story)?

About the process

  1. How do I send footage and receive files?
  2. What do you need from me in a brief?
  3. How do revisions work, and how many rounds are included?
  4. How long does a first draft usually take, and what affects that?
  5. How do you handle a busy month when I need more videos?

About quality

  1. Can you explain why you made the hook choice in one of your portfolio pieces?
  2. Can you match my existing style — or create one?
  3. Will you do a small paid test first?

About money and rights

  1. What exactly is included in the price: captions, b-roll, stock, music, motion graphics?
  2. How is music chosen, and is it licensed for my use?
  3. Who owns the finished videos and project files?
  4. What are the payment terms, and can I change plans month to month?

Red-flag answers

  • Guaranteeing views or “going viral”.
  • Vague answers about who edits.
  • No clear revision policy.
  • Pricing that can’t be expressed per video or per month.
  • Unverifiable testimonials.
